Plasma 6.5 Released – Overview of Improvements in KDE Plasma Mobile
On October 20, Plasma 6.5 was released, delivering a new set of improvements and refinements to Plasma Mobile and related KDE components.
This version continues the focus on stability, performance optimization, and better adaptation of the interface to different device form factors.
Improved Android App Integration
Plasma 6.5 enhances the Waydroid experience by integrating its configuration and management directly into the system settings. Users can now control the Waydroid container from the settings application and toggle it on or off via the quick settings panel. This change simplifies access to Android applications and improves overall usability on mobile devices.
Faster and More Consistent Lock Screen
The lock screen has been optimized to load more quickly by reusing existing shell components instead of initializing them separately. As a result, notification handling is now more consistent between the locked and unlocked states. Additional refinements include a double-tap-to-lock gesture and improved visual feedback for lock screen actions.
Advancements in Folio and Halcyon Home Screens
Both Folio and Halcyon home screens received visual and technical updates. Background blur effects were refined for greater consistency, while internal changes improved performance and keyboard navigation. Halcyon also gained a lightweight settings page and a modernized applet registration method, enabling more efficient precompilation.
Refined System Settings and Navigation
System settings were reorganized to better separate navigation options from other shell configurations. A short tutorial was added to explain gesture-based navigation, and tablet users can now adjust the maximum number of quick settings columns. Mobile-specific options are also limited to appropriate device types, avoiding unnecessary overlap with desktop configurations.
Performance, Haptics, and UI Polish
Additional work in Plasma 6.5 includes optimizations to the task switcher, initial migration of haptic feedback to a feedbackd-based backend, and performance improvements in the action drawer. The environment manager was strengthened to reduce conflicts between Plasma Mobile and Plasma Desktop in hybrid setups. Visual refinements further improve layout consistency, animation timing, and color usage across the interface.
New Virtual Keyboard and Ongoing Development
Alongside the 6.5 release, an early, unstable version of a new Plasma virtual keyboard was made available for testing. Plasma Mobile remains a community-driven project, and users interested in development or testing can consult the full changelog and contribute to its ongoing evolution.
