CoMaps v2026.01.24-5 – New Stable Release of the Offline Navigation App
A new stable version of the CoMaps community-driven, free and open-source offline navigation app, labeled v2026.01.24-5 (commit: 95f58cea42), has been released.
The update was published two days ago, and since its release nine commits have been added to the project’s main branch.
CoMaps is a community-driven, free and open-source, offline navigation app that uses map data from OpenStreetMap (OSM)
General Changes
In this release, OpenStreetMap data has been updated to the January 22 snapshot. Several interface labels were renamed: “Bookmarks & Tracks” was changed to “Favorites,” and “Bookmarks” was renamed to “Places.” The application now remembers the location centering and follow mode between sessions. A new setting was added that allows other system languages to be used only within their respective regions.
A crash affecting conditional access routing on 32-bit devices was fixed. Pedestrian and bicycle routing can now use parking aisles. Route builder warnings incorrectly marking paved tracks as unpaved were corrected. Sudden jumps of the location arrow were reduced, and address search was improved in selected U.S. states, including Utah, Arizona, Alaska, California, and Nevada. The map editor was extended to include additional public transport attributes for bus stops.
Android
On Android, the application now displays a track description when a track is selected. A local map language option was added. The editor gained support for alternative, old, and international names, along with updated UI appearance and colors. A green tint was added to dialog backgrounds, and the track recording button received a new icon and color. An arrow icon was added next to distance values in search results.
Several issues were resolved, including duplicate name entries in the same language, missing elevation and shadow effects in dialogs, and resetting advanced opening hours fields when switching apps. The editor now supports dark mode for advanced opening hours instructions. Spacing of zoom buttons was adjusted, and the app settings can be opened directly from the Android system App Info screen on Android 7 and newer.
iOS
On iOS, the map now uses a light appearance by default. A position mode toggle was added for CarPlay. Decimal values were removed from the current speed display, and an unused compass calibration setting was removed. Long address display issues on the Place Page were fixed, and the text related to confirming the existence of objects for recent dates was improved.
Map Rendering
Several updates were made to map rendering. Dark road borders and outlines were added, and native languages are now used for the world overview map. Road shield rendering was improved for selected European countries. New map features were added, including tactile information maps, railway turntables, and emergency disaster assistance points.
Rendering of disused and abandoned railways was adjusted. Support for POI subtypes was expanded, allowing certain categories to include more detailed classifications. Tree names are now displayed and more visible in forested areas. Public transport labels for subways and similar systems were updated, and multiple icons and label colors were corrected or adjusted. The Vienna U-Bahn icon was also updated.
