Motorola and GrapheneOS partnership announced

Motorola and GrapheneOS have announced a strategic partnership to integrate the GrapheneOS operating system into future Motorola smartphones.

The collaboration aims to provide users with higher levels of security and privacy protection, while maintaining full compatibility with Android applications. The partnership was announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress, highlighting both companies’ commitment to developing secure and private mobile solutions.

GrapheneOS – an advanced operating system for security

Motorola and GrapheneOS are joining forces to bring devices to market with an operating system based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP), distinguished by its unique data protection mechanisms. Developed since 2014, GrapheneOS introduces a range of innovative solutions, including:

  • enhanced app isolation – each app runs in a sandboxed environment, minimizing the risk of threats spreading between processes.
  • advanced exploit protections – mechanisms that make it harder to exploit software vulnerabilities, including memory corruption and privilege escalation.
  • granular permission controls – users have full control over app access to sensors, networks, and personal data.
  • no pre-installed Google services – with the option to install Google Play Services in an isolated environment.
  • optimized system applications, including:
    • Vanadium – a web browser with additional privacy safeguards.
    • Auditor – a tool for verifying device integrity.
    • Seedvault – a solution for encrypted backups.

According to GrapheneOS Foundation, many of these solutions have already been implemented in AOSP and other open-source projects, helping to raise security standards for users worldwide.

Key areas of collaboration between Motorola and GrapheneOS

The partnership focuses on four key areas:

  1. integration of GrapheneOS with Motorola devices The system will be optimized for Motorola hardware, ensuring full compatibility with Android apps and stable performance.
  2. joint research and development Motorola and GrapheneOS will collaborate on new security mechanisms aimed at protecting against threats such as zero-day attacks.
  3. enterprise tools
    • Moto Analytics: a platform for IT administrators to monitor device performance, app stability, and network security.
    • Private Image Data: a feature that automatically removes sensitive metadata (e.g., location) from photos.
  4. long-term support and updates Regular security updates are planned to keep devices protected against new threats.

Benefits for different user groups

  • individual users will gain access to smartphones with enhanced privacy protection, without losing Android functionality.
  • enterprises will receive tools for device fleet management, such as Moto Analytics, along with features to protect corporate data.
  • developers will benefit from a more secure platform for app development, thanks to GrapheneOS’s advanced security mechanisms.

Representatives from Motorola and GrapheneOS note that the partnership aims to make advanced security solutions accessible to both individual users and businesses.

Availability and next steps

The first Motorola smartphones with GrapheneOS are set to debut in the near future. Official software versions, documentation, and installation instructions will be available on the GrapheneOS Foundation website.
