NexPhone – a smartphone with three operating systems in one device

NexPhone is an upcoming next-generation smartphone developed by Nex Computer that combines the roles of a mobile phone and a personal computer.

The device stands out due to its ability to run three different operating systems on a single piece of hardware and its support for desktop-style operation when connected to an external display.

Multi-OS concept and convergence

According to the manufacturer’s announcements, NexPhone allows users to operate a mobile system in standard smartphone mode and switch to a desktop-like environment when the device is connected to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. This approach follows the idea of device convergence, where one piece of hardware serves as both a phone and a personal computer.

Open source status – what is open and what is not

From the perspective of free and open-source software, NexPhone follows a mixed model:

  • NexPhone is said to support Linux (Debian), which is a fully open-source operating system with publicly available source code.
  • Android, another supported system, is based on AOSP, which is open source, although commercial Android builds typically include proprietary components.
  • Windows 11 is a fully proprietary operating system and is not open source.

At the same time, the manufacturer has not published information indicating that its own software components are open source. This includes system integration layers, operating-system switching mechanisms, or device-specific modifications. There are currently no public source code repositories or licensing statements covering the NexPhone platform as a whole.

As a result, while NexPhone makes use of open-source components, the device itself is not currently presented as a fully open-source project.

Hardware and intended use

Based on available information, NexPhone is expected to feature a display of around 6.5 inches, a relatively high amount of RAM, modern USB-C connectivity with display output, and a battery designed to support extended desktop-mode usage. The device is also expected to meet increased durability standards.

NexPhone is aimed at users interested in mobile productivity, single-device workflows, and experimental approaches to operating systems on smartphones.

Availability

The release of NexPhone is planned for the second half of 2026. The manufacturer has announced global availability and the option for early reservations.
